Having advised on trade mark and design matters since 2001,
Clare qualified by examination in 2006, winning a prize for the
highest mark in the Trade Mark practice paper. Clare previously

Mark obtained his degree from the University of Manchester
in Chemistry with Patent Law. However, his initial training in
patents was by mechanical and electrical engineers and he
still enjoys work outside the chemical field, in particular acting
for clients in automotive, semiconductor fabrication, and sports
equipment sectors. Mark also edits two chapters of the highly
regarded European Patents Handbook and tutors trainee
patent attorneys as part of a course organised by the European
Patent Institute and the Centre d'Etudes Internationales de la
Propriété Intellectuelle at the University of Strasbourg.
The professional members of the firm are regulated by IPREG (www.ipreg.org.uk).
In addition, all European Patent Attorneys (EPA) are regulated by the Institute of
Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (www.patentepi.com).
Chartered Patent Attorneys, indicated by the initials CPA and formerly known as Chartered
Patent Agents, are fellows of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (www.cipa.org.uk).
All Chartered Patent Attorneys are also Registered Patent Attorneys (RPA).
The letters RTMA indicate qualification as a Registered UK Trade Mark Attorney (formerly
Registered Trade Mark Agent) and ETMA indicates qualification as a European Trade Mark
Attorney. Trade Mark Attorneys who are Members of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys
(www.itma.org.uk) use the postnominals MITMA.
Both European Trade Mark Attorneys (ETMA) and Chartered Patent Attorneys (CPA) may
handle Registered Design matters in both the UK and Europe.
Iain joined the profession in 2004 and also worked in an
innovation consultancy in Cambridge. He graduated from
Warwick University with a first class degree in Mathematics and
Physics, obtaining the highest marks in each year of his course.
He is a member of CIPA's Education and Computer Technology
Committees and is responsible for the European Patent
Handbook's chapter on computer-implemented inventions. In
his spare time, he sings and plays the piano, guitar and bass
in several bands.
Jo started training with Brookes Batchellor in 2001 and later
took time out to complete a PhD in Plant Sciences. Her research,
carried out at the Universities of Munich and Cambridge,
employed biochemical and molecular techniques to investigate
the impact of atmospheric pollution on beech trees. With a first
degree in Chemistry from Oxford University, Jo works in the
Chemical and Biotechnological fields.
