Hugh is an Oxford graduate physicist who has considerable
experience of both patent litigation and prosecution. He has for
some years dealt with semiconductor and electronic cases. He
works in our Tunbridge Wells office. He is married and a keen
Rotarian and classic sports car enthusiast.

Roy was for many years the senior partner of Prentice &
Matthews, another leading firm of patent and trade mark
attorneys. When his firm merged with Brookes Batchellor in
2007, he joined the firm as a consultant and now works at our
London office. Roy specialises in filing and prosecuting
applications for patents in the mechanical engineering field as
well as advising on design and copyright protection and trade
marks.

In addition, all European Patent Attorneys (EPA) are regulated by the Institute of
Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (

An encounter with patents in the laboratories of a company
specialising in polymer processing and the manufacture of seals
and sealants stimulate John - a chemistry graduate - to move
into the patent profession. With experience as an in-house
patent attorney with a major multinational, John specialises in
chemical and pharmaceutical work.

Tim Wood
On graduating, Tim worked as a design engineer with Sulzer in
Switzerland. He qualified as a patent attorney, then obtained
an MBA at Insead. After 10 years with Shell in France, Holland
and the UK, he joined BOC as Group Head of IP. Tim speaks
fluent French, reasonable Dutch and German. He lectures on
business strategy and has been an expert on several EU
programmes. He is also a Chartered (Mechanical) Engineer.

Tim Roberts
Tim Roberts has a Masters degree in Chemistry from Oxford
University and a Doctor of Laws degree (honoris causa) from
the University of Sheffield. Tim spent 35 years in the patent
department of ICI and has held many high profile positions,
including being: President of the Chartered Institute of Patent
Attorneys (CIPA), a member of the UK Government’s Intellectual
Property Advisory Committee (IPAC), a member of the Appeal
Board panel of the European Plant Variety Rights Office and the
chairman of an international Expert Panel on Proprietary Science
and Technology, set up by the World Bank. Tim is the General
Editor of the European Patents Handbook and has produced
numerous articles in leading scientific and legal journals.
